Walk-In Showers, Built for the Way You Actually Bathe.

A walk-in shower is the single most-requested upgrade we install in Sacramento County, and there's a reason. The 1980s and 90s alcove tub-shower combo that came standard in Roseville-spec floor plans, Folsom builder-grade tracts, and Elk Grove production homes was never designed to age well. The vinyl pan cracks. The fiberglass surrounds yellow. The aluminum-framed sliding doors mildew at the bottom track within five years. By the time the homeowner is ready to remodel, what they actually want is a real shower — one with frameless glass, real tile, a niche at the right height, and water that hits where it's supposed to.

We build that shower roughly 80 times a year across Sacramento, Folsom, Fair Oaks, Carmichael, Rancho Murieta, Gold River, and the Sacramento city neighborhoods (East Sac, Land Park, Curtis Park, Pocket-Greenhaven, Sierra Oaks). What follows is everything you need to know before you sign a contract.

Curbless or low-curb — and why it matters in Sacramento County

The most common question we get is whether a true curbless (zero-threshold) shower is possible in a given home. On a slab-on-grade foundation — which describes most homes built in Sacramento, Elk Grove, Folsom, and Roseville after about 1985 — the answer is “yes, but it requires cutting the slab.” We saw the slab to recess the drain and create the 1/4" per foot slope a curbless entry needs. It's a half-day of work, requires a structural-only inspection from the local jurisdiction in some cases, and adds about $2,200 to the project. Worth it if you want the spa look or you're planning for aging in place.

On a raised-foundation home — which describes most pre-1980 homes in East Sac, Land Park, Curtis Park, and the older Carmichael and Fair Oaks neighborhoods — curbless is dramatically easier because we have joist access from below. We furr down the joists in the shower footprint, set the drain in the bay below, and slope the new subfloor properly. No slab cutting, no extra inspection.

Low-curb (about 4") remains the most common choice in Sacramento County because it makes glass selection easier (door panels can sit on the curb), matches buyer expectations in mid-market homes, and costs about $1,800 less than going fully curbless. Both are fully waterproofed and built to the same standard.

Why frameless glass is non-negotiable

Framed and semi-frameless glass enclosures look dated within five years. The aluminum oxidizes in Sacramento's hard water, the bottom seals mildew, and the metal frames clash with everything modern Sacramento County buyers want. We default to 3/8" frameless tempered glass on every project. The hardware (hinges, U-channels, handles) is brushed-gold, polished-chrome, matte-black, or brushed-nickel — your call. Glass is custom-measured after the tile is set, never before, because tile shifts the opening dimensions by 1/4" or more.

For shower openings wider than 36" or door-only configurations, we upgrade to 1/2" glass. It costs about 25% more but it sits more rigidly in the opening and feels like a piece of architecture. Most Estate-tier Rancho Murieta and Gold River projects we do use 1/2" throughout.

Material choices that actually last in Sacramento

Sacramento County water tests at 6–14 grains per gallon depending on neighborhood — well above the “hard” threshold. That number drives material selection for any shower we install. Glazed porcelain wins because it's non-porous; the water sheets off without etching the surface. Large-format porcelain (24×48 and 12×48) is now our default for shower walls because it minimizes grout joints — which are the actual point of failure in a hard-water environment.

Natural stone (marble, travertine, limestone) is gorgeous but requires twice-yearly resealing in Sacramento. We'll install it if you're committed to that maintenance cycle. Otherwise we steer toward marble-look porcelain slabs — the same look without the maintenance tax. For floors, we default to a coordinating mosaic (2×2 hex or 1×2 herringbone) because the wider grout pattern provides traction your bare feet will appreciate.

On fixtures, we curate from Kohler, Delta, Hansgrohe, and Brizo. We've learned which valve cartridges fail early in hard water and which hold up — that knowledge is part of what you're paying for. We always specify thermostatic valves on Signature and Estate tiers because Sacramento's afternoon water-pressure dips will otherwise scald you when someone flushes a toilet upstairs.
