Quality varies — the right stock vanity from the right manufacturer is fine in a guest bath; the wrong stock vanity from a no-name brand falls apart within five years. Semi-custom vanities (Strasser Woodenworks, Kith, James Martin Furniture, Wyndham Collection at the higher tiers) ship in 3 to 5 weeks and run $1,800–$8,500 for the cabinet alone. They're factory-built with better hardware (real soft-close glides, proper hinges, dovetailed drawers), more sizing flexibility (60"–84" double vanities are common), and a wider range of finishes. The cabinets read as a meaningful upgrade over stock and are the right choice for most primary suites at the Signature tier.

Custom millwork from Sacramento-area cabinet shops is its own category. The cabinets are built to your dimensions in walnut, white oak, painted maple, rift-cut white oak, or any species the homeowner wants. Lead time is 5 to 7 weeks. Cost is $7,500–$22,000 for a 72" double vanity before tops. The visual signature reads completely differently from stock or semi-custom — door-frame proportions, drawer-interior detail, integrated LED, and end-panel returns that match the door material. Worth it on Estate-tier primary suites; rarely worth it in guest baths.

Top materials and the hard-water reality

Integrated lighting that actually works

Custom millwork: the engineering behind the cabinet

Custom millwork from a real cabinet shop reads completely differently from stock and semi-custom. The differences are subtle individually and decisive collectively. Frameless or full-overlay construction with consistent 1/4"-reveal door gaps. Dovetailed drawer boxes in solid maple. Soft-close glides rated for 100 pounds (vs. 75 pounds on most semi-custom). Drawer interiors finished — typically a clear matte lacquer over the same species as the cabinet exterior. End-panel returns that match the door material instead of a contrasting plywood panel. Toe-kick depth of 4" (vs. 3.5" on stock) for proper foot clearance.

The detail homeowners notice every morning is the drawer interior. We spec dedicated outlet drawers for hair tools — two USB-C ports and a single GFCI outlet inside the drawer, so the countertop stays clear and the curling iron has somewhere to live other than the towel bar. Console vanities and period-honest installs
