The bathtub replacement is the project most Sacramento County homeowners think about and then put off for another year. Why the surround comes out with the tub

The most-asked question on tub replacements is whether the existing tile surround can stay. The answer in 95% of cases is no — and the reason is what's behind the tile. Most surrounds installed before 2010 in Sacramento County use felt-paper backer board with tile-mastic adhesive. The felt paper absorbs moisture, the mastic releases its bond when wet, and the wall framing behind the tile slowly rots. By the time the homeowner is ready to replace the tub, the surround has been failing invisibly for years.

We tear out the existing surround down to studs on every tub replacement except true like-for-like swaps where the surround was recently installed with proper waterproofing. We replace the substrate with cement backer board (HardieBacker or Durock) and apply Schluter Kerdi or Wedi membrane over the substrate before tile sets. The membrane is what stops water from reaching the framing. It costs about $400–$800 in materials added to the project and it's the single biggest difference between a 5-year tub and a 25-year tub.

Tub material, weight, and the cast-iron question

Bathtubs come in five material categories: cast iron, Americast (steel core with porcelain enamel), porcelain on steel, acrylic, and fiberglass. We default to Americast or porcelain-on-steel for most alcove replacements — they hold heat better than acrylic, don't flex underfoot, and last 30+ years. Cast iron is the heritage choice and we install it on period-honest restorations in East Sac, Land Park, and Curtis Park where the home calls for it. Cast iron weighs 300–450 pounds; we coordinate the install with the structural reality of the floor (almost always fine on slab, occasionally requires joist sistering on raised foundations).

We avoid budget-bin acrylic and fiberglass tubs from big-box stores even when homeowners ask. They flex when you stand in them, lose heat in 8 minutes, and yellow within five years in Sacramento's hard water. The $400 savings on the tub becomes a $4,000 replacement in year six. Freestanding tubs and the floor-mount filler

When the replacement makes sense vs. the conversion

We have the same conversation with most tub-replacement consultations: does it make more sense to replace the tub or to convert it to a walk-in shower? The answer depends on three factors. First, how often the tub gets actual use — for homeowners who bathe regularly, the tub stays. Second, how many other tubs are in the home — for single-tub homes, especially in family-oriented Folsom, Elk Grove, and Roseville neighborhoods, the tub stays for resale. Third, who lives in the home — homes with small children or with regular caregiving needs benefit from keeping the tub.

The conversion makes sense when the tub is unused, the home has at least one other bathing option, and the homeowner wants the room to function as a real shower without expanding the footprint. The replacement makes sense when the tub gets actual use, when it's the only tub in the home, or when the homeowner wants to keep the tub and just refresh the install.
